Initiatives that are building an alternative to today’s economic and financial system will converge in Barcelona in the spring of 2020: at the World Social Forum of Transformative Economies. It is an evolution of the World Social Forum which, in its last edition, started a process of convergence with other movements.
The event aims to boost dialogue among public institutions, so as to build public policies that encourage more humane ways of understanding the economy, and also to set a new global agenda for initiatives that want to transform the economy.
The result of a process of local and international convergence
The last World Social Forum took place in Salvador de Bahía in March 2018. There started a convergence process among movements, practices, initiatives and ways of understanding the economy, in a quest to transform today’s economic system, taking it a step further than solidarity economy. The process will have several stages across all continents and will culminate at the World Social Forum of Transformative Economies in Barcelona.
In Catalonia, the first step will translate in a three-day meeting in the spring of 2019. This meeting will bring together 500 representatives from social movements and networks, university research groups and municipal members to discuss alternative ways of understanding the economy. It will be a work meeting with activities to develop new convergence processes on a local and international scale. This will also be the warm-up before the 2020 Forum and will help set goals to prepare the scene at an international level.
The WFS of Transformative Economies will take place during the spring of 2020 and will count with around ten thousand participants. The programme is set to include conferences and general assemblies to interlink the feminist economies, the agroecology and food sovereignty movement, the commons, solidarity economy and ethical finances.
