The ocean sustains life, yet faces daily threats from human activity. Sea Shepherd Global fights to protect marine wildlife through direct action. This call urges everyone to join the fight to help save our oceans before it’s too late.
Take two deep breaths. One of those breaths comes directly from the sea and the oxygen produced by phytoplankton. Every day we interact with the sea, no matter where we are. The ocean is life, it gives life and sustains life. And every day there are people and companies dedicated to destroying what gives us life.
That's why marine conservation is so important. That's why it's so important to do something to protect it, each and every one of us. Our lives are at stake. And it's not that hard, especially when we appreciate what's at stake. What has to happen for us to say enough is enough? The complete disappearance of whales and krill? Seas full of antibiotics? The disappearance of monk seals or mother-of-pearl pearls? Think... what specific event has to happen for us to get involved every day with marine conservation?
These questions are the reason why there are people who wake up every day solely with the mission of stopping this destruction, saving the wildlife and life in the ocean. To be able to expose the people who profit from it and sail the seas to be present on the various fronts across the planet. They are the brave people who make up the crews of Sea Shepherd Global's ships, the largest private fleet of activists on the planet.
Every day we sail the seas, searching for illegal fishing boats in Africa, a place where we have detained and seized more than 100 vessels in port. Poached boats with a capacity of up to 750,000 shark fins each, detained and deactivated so they can no longer plunder the ocean. Multiply that by 100, and you can learn about the millions of sharks, or other animals caught in the same nets, that we have saved in our campaigns.
We have been returning to Antarctica for two years to ensure that the Japanese whaling fleet has stopped killing whales in this pristine and protected place. What we've documented over the past two years is that whales are currently facing another threat: krill-catching vessels, which literally take the food out of the whales' mouths, condemning them to starvation, being run over, or entangled in the fishing gear of industrial fisheries. You don't need harpoons to kill them; they can also starve them to death...
That's why we ask that we be conscious of the decisions we make as consumers. Do not consume products derived from krill harvesting. If you know of any company that sells krill, write an email or inform them of the consequences of producing the product they sell. If they profit from it, they are participating in the attacks these animals suffer. You are also part of our campaign when you reach out to these people and companies and explain the impact they are causing. You are on the same front as our volunteers at sea.
At Sea Shepherd Spain, we have a program, "Commitment to the Sea," where we encourage people to take a specific action every day that is related to the sea, to the ocean.
Make an oath, a commitment. "I commit, every day, to do something that will leave the sea and its environment better than it was yesterday."
It can be anything from cleaning a beach, raising awareness about what we do, organizing marine conservation activities, or attending one of our campaigns. You can also follow the activities of Sea Shepherd volunteers wherever they are, providing encouragement and resources to people carrying out conservation activities that we may not be able to undertake that day due to circumstances.
In this way, our direct action becomes daily action. Every day. The ocean and the natural communities that inhabit it cannot wait. Join the fight and participate.
