CivicTech4Democracy, bringing democracy closer to citizens

To mark the International Day of Democracy on 15 September, the European Union has launched the global competition CivicTech4Democracy to showcase and reward democratic innovation by citizens for citizens around the globe.

In this era of technology, many are finding new ways to bring democracy closer to the people; in this sense, this competition aims to reward projects that have been implemented since 2010 that have successfully used digital tools to advance democracy.

Anyone wishing to participate in the competition must record a short video of around 2 minutes explaining their project and upload it to gain as many votes as possible. On 10 August the rewarded projects will be announced and on 14 September the awards will be given at a ceremony in Brussels.

Requirements for participation

• Being an NGO worker, blogger, civic technologist, grassroots activists, human rights defender, academic or any other person that has used digital tools to advance democracy and place it at the service of the common good.;
• Having a project that has been successfully implemented between 2010 and today;
• The project must be transparent, with advanced participation and/or responsibility in a country that does not belong to the OECD.
