Millions of people worldwide are expected to mark IDAHOBIT on May 17 with events promoting LGBTQIA+ rights and inclusion. Organizers say the 2026 campaign highlights the link between democracy, equality and bodily autonomy.
Communities, activists and institutions across the globe will come together on May 17 to observe the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT), with activities planned in more than 60 countries and territories, according to the event’s advisory group.
First established in 2005, IDAHOBIT commemorates the World Health Organization’s historic 1990 decision to remove homosexuality from its classification of mental disorders. Since then, the annual observance has become a global platform to denounce discrimination and violence affecting LGBTQIA+ people, while also promoting policies that guarantee equal rights and protections.
This year’s theme, “At the Heart of Democracy,” focuses on the growing pressure that reactionary political movements are placing on sexual and gender diversity, as well as on bodily autonomy. Organizers argue that attacks on LGBTQIA+ communities are increasingly being used to challenge democratic values and social inclusion.
In a statement, the IDAHOBIT advisory group stressed that societies can only thrive when fairness and justice are guaranteed for everyone, regardless of identity or beliefs. The group also warned that exclusionary laws and authoritarian policies risk undermining communities worldwide.
Despite these challenges, organizers highlighted the role LGBTQIA+ people and allies continue to play in driving social progress and defending human rights. They called on individuals everywhere to join the movement and help build a more inclusive future.
