An international work camp brings together young people from nine countries to recover dry stone in Catalonia

The initiative combines the recovery of dry stone heritage with international volunteering and cultural exchange between twenty-four young people from nine countries.

Twenty-four young people from Catalonia, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Ukraine, Italy, Mexico, Canada, France and Serbia are participating until August 1 in the international work camp 'Beyond the vineyard: the legacy of dry stone' , which is being held in Subirats (Alt Penedès). The initiative allows them to learn dry stone restoration techniques while contributing to preserving this heritage and living together with young people from all over the world. Among the participants are young Ukrainians who are part of a program aimed at people displaced by war conflicts.

Recovering the heritage of dry stone

The work camp offers practical training in dry stone restoration and conservation techniques, led by a team of instructors from Ordal. The activity combines field work with the discovery of the historical and cultural heritage of Subirats and its surroundings.

The program includes visits to the site of the Battle of Ordal in 1813, the Subirats Castle, the Trenches Route and the Barcelona Last Defense Interpretation Center. Participants also visit different wineries in the region to get to know the territory.

An experience of international coexistence

In addition to heritage-related activities, the camp includes a program of recreational and cultural activities with outings to Barcelona and Vilafranca del Penedès, human tower sessions and bivouac excursions. These proposals promote cultural exchange and coexistence between people from different backgrounds.

Participants highlight its human value

Ángel Álvarez, a participant from Mexico, says that the work camp has allowed him to meet people from very diverse cultures and broaden his perspective.

"This experience represents a big change for me and has opened my mind a lot"

For its part, the Elna Bernabeu, in Barcelona, highlights the coexistence that is generated there.

"It's an opportunity to live with other people from other cultures and other thoughts"

The 7th International Youth Work Camp is organized with the collaboration of the Directorate General of Youth of the Generalitat de Catalunya , Fundesplai and the Subirats City Council . The Subirats Studies Center (CESUB) assumes the direct coordination of the field activities.
